30 years ago tonight I can tell you exactly where I was and what I did...
Friday, August 15, 1980, we were entertaining our next-door neighbors, Joey and Mike Dennison to a spaghetti dinner, when, mid serving, Karen's water broke sending us to St. Ann's Hospital. This was the beginning of 20-something hours of labor. Of course Karen's obstetrician, Dr. Veach, was unavailable, but there were certainly enough residents to get us through the night, the morning, and the next afternoon.
We knew the baby wanted out. We wanted the baby out. Finally, I had enough, and calmly but firmly told the staff nurse that it was time this baby was delivered. C-section was the only option. Karen's stand-in doctor was called in and we were prepped for surgery. On Saturday, August 16, 1980, at 3:54 p.m., a healthy 5 lb. 11 oz. baby boy was born, introduced as Seth Brian Distelzweig. My Mom, Dad and sister PJ were in the waiting room. I gave Dad a big hug, then gave out the information. Karen was still in recovery, and I wasted no time getting back to her and Seth. I held Seth in my arms, his tiny fingers wrapping my finger. He gazed into my eyes and yawned. Soon he drifted off to sleep and a nurse got him ready for the nursery. Karen took her good ol' time coming out of the anesthetic, but was awake a couple of hours later. She wanted me to rest, as well as get some rest for herself, so she sent me home about 7:00. I remember taking E. Broad St. all the way home, rejoicing in the fact that Karen and Seth were both OK, and that I'd see them the next morning.
I got home, got cleaned up, and made all of the phone calls informing everyone of our new addition!
Yep, I remember it like it was just yesterday. And it was just yesterday. A blink of an eye.
Happy Birthday, Seth, my precious son! I love you!
